Chicago’s main music video dude GL-Joe strikes again. Aside from yesterday’s video debut of the new Cool Kids track “Pennies” (stay tuned for that or see photos from the shoot here), Joe just also dropped a new video for Mic Terror which is super rad! Mic Terror is back with another solid track, this time rapping over the backing of Black Star’s “Definition” which is one of my favorite jams.
Check the video below along with another dope Mic Terror track. And Joe wanted to remind you to watch it in high def because it looks a lot better! Oh yeah, and stay tuned also for a brand new mixtape from Mic Terror in the near future..
“ya’ll gunna be on YouTube!” .. haha dude doesn’t lie! Hioooo!
Ok Ok.. so I know this track is far from new and most of you have heard it time and again. And I know sometimes this blog can get all Nigel on you a little too much but oh well.. a few cool new remixes have emerged recently and I have yet to blog the official music video which features a cameo by yours truly (the dude with the camera towards the end, of course).
Peanut Butter Wolf dropped this track into his set on New Years Eve along with the video on the big screen and it reminded me of its existence. So before I forget all about posting it again, here is some Hollywood Holt madness!
And of course, the post is not complete without the video shot by Chicago’s own Taran & Alex (or Alex & Taran depending on how drunk I am) of Thunderhorse. Dudes need to bump the brightness, tho!
So here is the second set of photos from New Years Eve at the Congress Theater here in Chicago! I took over 1,500 photos and like 30 minutes of video during the night.. pretty epic. I also managed to get way more drunk than I should’ve been thanks to my friends handing me drinks all night long. The entire Justice set is a blur to me. I’m amazed I got such decent shots. Oh and of course I just had to crowd surf as well. ha.
After Justice, Zebo went on for the remaining time while I attempted to sober up a bit. After the lights went on it was a mass exodous and was basically impossible to get a ride back into Wicker Park. I ended up hitching a ride from some guy who had been driving people back and forth all night and probably made a decent amount of money doing it!
And another year bites the dust…

So 2008 has come and gone. Of course most of you probably heard about the big party that went down at Congress Theater. Justice, the crazy sensation from France, flew into town to headline the show and walk out with who knows how many thousands of dollars. The lineup was pretty solid and the show sold out. I was a bit hesitant to step foot anywhere near this place but figured it would be a good time… crazy-overload and all. Aside from a rough start with seemingly none of the staff knowing anything that was going on, the whiskeys began to flow and things got popping!
Willy Joy played before and after Home Video, who were followed by Hey Champ. DJs Peanut Butter Wolf and So Me took over and played up til midnight. In the other room, Skyler, Darkwave DJs and The Glamour got the party started.
For the most part I was running around like a mad man trying to get photos & video of everything and say hello to the endless amount of familiar faces.
These photos cover the first few hours. In the next update will be Justice and the rest of the party so stay tuned!
Busy night, lots going on.. well, at two spots at least! Skyler got me to check out Bon V for a minute. The place was jam packed and the doorguy made everyone I was with pay $10 to get in (supposed to be free!). I really don’t understand the appeal of these kind of places. Wait in line to pay a crazy cover to be stuffed into a crowded room with a long line at the bar full of expensive drinks. Oh well, whatever makes you happy I guess!
I wasn’t expecting much from T-Pain’s set, considering he’s not a DJ and all, but he played well enough to keep the energy going. Quick cuts between various hip hop hits, T-Pain and Weezy tracks and plenty of hype man (oh and some live violin too) filled his (30ish minute?) set.
Back at Sonotheque, things were also hopping. Josh got to play Flosstradamus’ first original track out, Kid Sister showed up and avoided my camera as usual and plenty of other mayhem ensued. Enough talk (boring), click the pics to see the whole gallery!

First off, happy holidays and all that good stuff! Been way busy lately and up in Wisconsin with the family. Hoping to get back into the swing of things and start posting more and more often around here!
One thing I’ve never managed to do well is sharing publications in which my photos have been printed. I think getting stuff published is one of the most rewarding parts of being a photographer, so I’d like to do this more in the future. Most of you probably could care less, so I’ll at least try to keep it somewhat relevant!
December 2008, Italian GQ
GQ did a little 2-page spread featuring the work of five different nightlife photographers from around the world. ambrel in NY, dirtydirtydancing in London, cobrasnake in LA, icanteachyouhow in Barcelona and myself in Chicago!
December 2008, Milwaukee Magazine
Milwaukee Mag did a fun little article featuring “36 young Milwaukeeans [who] will help lead the city into the future.” And what do you know, our favorite MKE hipster-hop artist Juiceboxxx was one of the thirty-six featured! (You can read this article while it’s still online here)
Was nothing short of an epic night.. there have been a few of those lately. Willy’s monthly party went down at Debonair with Tittsworth headlining. There was a bit of a snow storm going on but a surprising amount of people were still out and about. One of New York City’s best bars just got a new Chicago location. The place is called Crocodile and the deal is you get a free pizza with a drink order and damn are those pizzas delicious! I went back a few nights later and the bartender seemed super annoyed about the pizza deal and only gave us two pizzas for three people/drinks, so we’ll see how it goes. Oh, and Jason Tyler is programming the music over there so expect to see a DJ set from me once a month or so! First gig is Saturday Jan 2nd 2009!
Along with all that goodness it was Major Taylor’s birthday and he was spinning over at Empire. Too much to do and all on one city block! Oh and of course we all headed to Flatiron after the 2am’s closed down.. yeah, I know.

The past few weeks I’ve taken any job offer that has come my way and while it’s been good on the wallet, it’s put me in a lot of places I would not normally hang out in or shoot at. While Crobar or Crimson Lounge are not the worst places in the world, they are far from where I’d prefer to be shooting. I think a big facor is that the people in these places tend to be more image-conscious, older and perhaps even less creative-minded, which sort of restricts my photo taking possibilities. I want things to get sloppy and awkward and out of control.
Anyway, so here I am at Crobar. There was a killer snow storm all day long and no more than a dozen people even showed up for a few hours into the event. It finally got swinging around midnight or so and by that time we were fairly drunk on the surprisingly good tequila, which I am not normally a fan of.
The party was a B96 show afterparty and some fairly well-known dudes were in the building, though I don’t remember the names of any of them haha. Kevin Rudolf and Kanye’s manager yada yada yada.

The dudes over at myopenbar hosted a burlesque show with free drambuie (huh?) liqueouer (this is the fanciest way I can think to spell it) and a fun/odd/cool/goofy burlesque show. My favorite part was when the comedian slowly swallowed a looong balloon. Well that and the getting drunk for free part. Oh, and one girl was walking around hammering a nail into her nose.

You’re probably familiar by now with the Mountain Dew-sponsored music label Green Label Sound. They’ve already released tracks from Matt & Kim and The Cool Kids. Next up, it’s Flosstradamus!
Chicago’s own superstar DJs Josh and Curt have been working on a new album of original tracks for a while and finally we get a little sample of what it might sound like! And better yet, it’s not bad! It’s no club banger but from briefly talking with Curt I think the best is yet to come..
And speaking of Flosstradamus, they are doing a big holiday show at Abbey Pub on December 27th. I’ll be giving away two free tickets in my next e-mail blast (later today most likely) along with a pair of tickets for Justice’s New Years Eve show at Congress.. As for me, I need to get back into the groove of updating this site more often! Things have been fairly hectic the past few weeks..
